Straight lines - ruler or no ruler

I have been reading a wonderful book, which was sent to by my friend Cora, and I now have small problem. In the book it says that it is best to use a ruler for straight lines! I don't know weather this is a good idea or not, when does a drawing become a technical drawing  and a sketch, I have always been told that in art you don't use templates and rulers for drawing but to use them for technical drawing. Well I think I agree with the book, a ruler is neccesery for certain drawings and I will demonstrate that by working on the excersises in the book, so fingers crossed that they turn out OK.

Everything man made has straight lines. So if you draw, or sketch a building, you should use a ruler, but if it's a tree, you should not use one.
